December is a month when people tend to spend extra time at home together with family and friends. More time at home with additional people in the house means that there is a greater risk of accidents and injury, so we decided that this was a good time to make a few simple safety suggestions.

Perhaps you are someone who enjoys candles and string lights. If so, make sure you check the lights for broken bulbs and fraying wires, and never leave candles burning in a room unsupervised or next to flammable items.

Fire poses a big risk during the colder months, especially during December, so there is a need to be extra vigilant. If you enjoy the benefits of an open fire at home, it’s a good idea to double-check that the flue is open before lighting it. You also need to remove any combustible items that are decorating the surrounds of the fireplace.

When was the last time you went through the home and tested your carbon monoxide and smoke detectors? Remember, they are often the first things that alert you to fire in a home, so make sure they are all in good working order.

Lastly, if you will be having small children staying in your home, check through the house to ensure there are no potentially dangerous items lying around. Even poinsettias are poisonous, so if you have this plant in the home, you may want to keep it out of reach of children and pets.
