What appliance are we talking about? The kitchen garbage disposal system. So, is there a wrong way to use it? How can you ensure that your garbage disposal unit stays in good working order for a long time to come?
The right way to use it. Believe it or not, a kitchen garbage disposal unit is not intended for all types of garbage. It is designed specifically for small fragments of food waste. When placed into the garbage disposal, these food fragments are ground up very small enabling them to easily flush through the system and into a sewer or septic tank.
The wrong way to use it. It may seem obvious but nonfood items should not be placed into the garbage disposal unit. Items like bottle tops, plastic wrap, and aluminum foil, to name a few, frequently end up in the sink along with the dishes. These items can all cause the unit to stop working properly. You should also avoid pouring certain liquids into the garbage disposal (or any sink, for that matter). Grease, oil, and chemicals should all be disposed of another way.
Did you know? There are even some food items that you should avoid placing into the garbage disposal system. Corn husks, potato peelings, or other fibrous foods can stop the unit from functioning correctly. Bones will also cause the blades to become blunt. If you really need to place these food items into the unit, make sure they are in very small amounts and keep the water running until after the garbage disposal has ground up the items.
