Tornadoes, as we know, have the ability to cause untold destruction. Of course, the extent of the damage will depend on the severity of the tornado, but even a relatively small one can result in a lot of damage to your property. Here are a few of the areas you should have inspected after a tornado, and remember, that the damage might not be apparent at first glance:
The roof is one of the most commonly affected areas during a tornado. You will need to have any damage repaired as soon as possible to prevent problems associated with water damage such as mold. The chimney should also be inspected.
While it may not be evident at first glance, the walls or floors of the home may have shifted during the tornado. Check for stress cracks, that might have formed as a result of the tornado, particularly where the ceiling meets the walls. You might find a level helpful when checking these areas.
As the tornado rattles a building’s structure it can damage its plumbing system. After the storm, check for water leaks by turning on all the faucets in the house. Have a look under sinks and cabinetry for signs that water is leaking.
It is a good idea to check the crawlspace under the house but only if it is safe to do so. If you are able and you notice signs of damage, it is possible that the tornado has damaged the house foundations and the structure has been compromised.
