Do you dream of fixing up and restoring an old home? Perhaps you are about to make that dream a reality. If you are, then you may be aware that the key to success will be to prepare yourself for all the potential issues you will encounter. One of those is asbestos.

We have only discovered the dangers of asbestos in more recent years, and it is now known to cause some very serious health problems, especially if someone has been exposed to asbestos fibers over many years. However, before being aware of these dangers, asbestos was used extensively in construction because of its strength, fire resistance, and ability to provide heat insulation.

Is it possible to be exposed to asbestos during a home renovation? Yes, if the home was built before or during the 1970s and has not been updated since then you may well encounter asbestos. Asbestos will become hazardous if asbestos fibers are released into the air, this can happen during the demolition process when tearing up floors and walls, etc. This will create an unsafe environment to work in.

How should you remove asbestos? As we already mentioned, planning out the project is crucial. Before you even begin the renovation work you should have a home inspection performed to see if asbestos was used in the home’s construction. If it has, then you will need to have it removed by a professional company qualified to remove asbestos, this is something that you will need to budget for as you should NOT attempt to remove it yourself.
