Your attic – you might not have spent too much time in it, but how do you get up there? Some homes have chosen to save space by having an attic pull-down ladder, and while this is an elegant solution to the space a staircase would take up, there are some shortcomings with a pull-down ladder. If you aren’t aware of what these shortcomings are, you could end up hurting yourself or damaging your pull-down ladder.

If you look at how an attic pull-down ladder is made, you will notice that they often have hinges to allow the ladder to extend, and these will be a weak point on the ladder. You should avoid having too much weight putting pressure on the hinges. A good way to minimize the strain is to have someone hand you items to put in the attic instead of trying to climb the ladder carrying them.

You should also make sure that the ladder is firmly attached since a poorly installed ladder could rip right out of the ceiling when under pressure.
